We’ve all had occasions when all you want to do is fire off a text or make a quick call but there’s just no signal, some people even experience it regularly if they happen to live or work in a signal dead spot.
That’s where Three inTouch comes in. It’s a new service from Three which allows you to make calls and send texts over Wi-Fi. There’s no login or password required, so it’s easy to use and there are no extra charges as calls and texts are taken from your monthly price plan or pay as you go credit, all you need is a Three number and to have the app on your phone.
Right now that second bit is easier said than done, as the app is in beta and only available to customers with serious signal problems. If that’s you then give Three a call and if they agree that the app could help you they’ll send you a download link for it. Though bear in mind that as the app is in beta you may experience some issues with it.
Right now the app is only compatible with devices running Android 4.0 or above, however the final version of the app will launch in August, at which point it will also be compatible with iOS 7 and readily available for both Android and iOS users.
There are a few other things worth noting. For one it only works on Wi-Fi, so you can’t use it on 3G or 4G. As it’s using Wi-Fi it won’t affect your data allowance, however it will use up your minutes and texts and it uses around 0.7MB of data per minute, so while Three won’t charge you for that it’s worth being aware of in case your ISP has data limits.
Three inTouch also isn’t a peer to peer service, so you can call and text anyone through it, not just other inTouch users, which is one of the main advantages it has over something like Skype or WhatsApp.
It remains to be seen how well it will work, but on paper it sounds like it will be worth having once it’s properly released, as even if your signal is normally fine you never know when you might be somewhere where it’s not.
