Canonical have announced that they are bringing their Ubuntu platform for smartphones very soon. The Ubuntu operating system is a Linux-based platform that has been a favourite of desktop PC users for years.
The goal of the Ubuntu operating system has always been to make the Linux-platform accessible to the masses and the smartphone version looks set to adopt a similar model.
The platform will really shine when smartphones are docked with a keyboard mouse and monitor because it'll essentially turn your mobile into a desktop PC running Ubuntu. You won't even need a high-end smartphone to take advantage of the feature due to the efficiency of the platform which works with both ARM and x86 chipsets.
Ubuntu also incorporates an excellent user-interface that utilises a unique gesture based interface that uses the four corners of the touch-screen. The "four-corner" gesture interface will enable users to switch between applications, content and menus faster than any other operating system.
Other features of the Ubuntu platform include a voice and text-search which works across the whole operating system, a customisable welcome screen and support for native, web and HTML5 applications.
The smartphone operating system market looks set to become very crowded in the next year because as well as the Ubuntu platform the Tizen platform will also be launching. While we'll also see the launch of Blackberry 10 , the rise of Windows Phone and the continued dominance of Android and iOS.
As soon as 3G get more news about the launch of the Ubuntu smartphone platform we'll let you know. We hope it'll come pre-installed on some smartphones because installing the platform on smartphones might prove too complicated for some users.
