Full Review

The original T-Mobile Pulse was a low-budget Android phone, one of the first. It had a 3.5-inch display so the device was massive, and that put some potential buyers off. The network has addressed the size issue by teaming up with Chinese manufacturer Huawei to produce the Pulse Mini, with a more comfortable 2.8-inch screen.

Touch-screen on the T-Mobile Pulse Mini

The touch-screen on the Pulse Mini is the resistive type rather that the capacitive screen of the Pulse. This means that it responds to pressure instead of gentle swipes, and is generally found on cheaper phones. They don’t look as impressive, and there’s no multi-touch option to give you the pinch-to-zoom effect you find on the iPhone, for example. On the plus side, you can use them with gloves on, or use a stylus, which you can’t on a capacitive screen.

Unsurprisingly, the smaller screen has a lower resolution than its predecessor but it does display more colours.

User friendliness on the T-Mobile Pulse Mini

The small screen makes for a small handset, but it does feel good in the hand. There are a handful of keys on the front of the handset, despite the touch-screen. These are a round D-pad with a central button, and dedicated End and Send keys. There are also touch-sensitive icons at the foot of the screen for Menu, Home and Back. On the top of the Pulse you’ll find the power key; on the bottom, the 3.5mm audio port; and on the right-hand side, the volume switch and the camera button. It’s fairly crowded for a touch-screen phone.

Where the Pulse Mini does beat the Pulse is with Android 2.1, the latest edition of the operating system. This gives you funky features like animated wallpapers for your home screen, which are cool if power-hungry.

Internet and navigation on the T-Mobile Pulse Mini

That small screen can make web browsing frustrating. You can zoom in with a double-tap but by the time you have text large enough to read, there’s not much of it on the screen. It’s okay but a larger screen is definitely better.

Moving between home screens is a simple process, which is a good job because there are 12 of them, with the option to add more. Press the navigation key and you’ll see thumbnails of nine screens. Drag them until you find the one you want and press on it to get it in full screen. You can also shrink pages using an on-screen icon.

You also get access to Android Market, which has 20,000 applications available

The biggest problem with the Pulse Mini is the speed, or rather lack of it. It takes nearly five seconds just to launch the 3.2-megapixel camera. This is surprising, as the Pulse Mini allegedly has a 600MHz processor, like the one found in the speedy HTC Legend.

The verdict on the T-Mobile Pulse Mini

The Pulse Mini is a nice-looking handset with lots going for it including GPS and a digital compass. Whether this is enough to make up for the slow speed is debatable.
