The Huawei Ascend G330 had loads of great features and has a neat, well-built design, especially at this mid-range price.
The folks at Huawei are experts when it comes to producing affordable smartphones, so it’s no surprise that the Huawei Ascend G330 manages to impress. While in some ways you get what you pay for if you buy a mid-ranger, phones such as Sony’s Xperia J and the HTC Desire X have proved that it is possible to get a decent Android handset for a middle-of-the-road price tag.
Often the first place corners are cut on mid-range handsets is with the screen. Low-res, dull displays can be the curse of the lower-priced smartphone, But Huawei has managed to produce a four-inch screen that is sharp and bright and with a good 480x800 resolution that makes photos look good. Okay, it’s not up there with the screen on the Sony Xperia S but for the price tag it’s a decent effort.
It’s a really spacious display, with plenty of room for surfing the net and playing games or fiddling about with apps. Again, games and video may well look better on the Samsung Galaxy S III, but you’re paying a higher price for that.
Cheaper handsets often suffer from poor build quality – they flex and creak and feel as though they wouldn’t survive any knocks or tumbles. Not so the Ascend G330, which feels really solid and looks good too, with its silver edges, black-framed screen and back panel that is surrounded by a white edge. It looks classic and clean.
The chassis is matt black and feels good to hold – its rubberised back enables you to keep a firm grip. It’s not the lightest of phones, weighing in at 130g, but this heft actually makes it feel like a more expensive phone. The only thing that feels a bit plasticky is the silver battery cover, but thanks to the solid feel of the rest of the phone, that doesn’t really matter.
Under the hood sits a 1 GHz dual-core chip, which is coupled with 512MB RAM to offer smooth performance. We didn’t experience any lags and operation was smooth. You might want to expand the onboard 4 GB of storage though – this is possible using the microSD card.
Battery life is very average for a smartphone – you’ll be charging it every day, and more often if you’re planning to stream video from YouTube or using the included iPlayer app.
Signal strength and call quality are good for anyone who actually uses their mobile for making calls.
The phone runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is one of the later versions. Its interface is user friendly and it’s simple to find your way around the system. The notifications bar lets the user toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and flight mode on and off, as well as keeping you up to date on missed calls, new text messages and so on.
The onscreen keyboard is easy to use, although you can always download a different one from Google play store if you fancy something different. Emailing and texting was easy, especially with all that screen real estate.
The snapper is a five-megapixel model with LED flash. Picture quality is decent, although it doesn’t exactly wow the user. Mind you, shutter lag is pretty short so snaps are taken almost straight away. Low-light photos were a tad dull.
There are plenty of features and manual controls, include the option to take panoramic photos, and add coloured, negative, and posterised filters and so on. It is also possible to tag your location and set a timer, should you wish.
The front-facing VGA snapper is fine for Skyping.
The Huawei Ascend G330 is a well-built, good-looking smartphone that has plenty of nice features at a mid-range price. You get some decent hardware for that price, and Huawei has managed to cut the right corners to get an affordable smartphone – a good choice for anyone buying their first smartphone.
