Sky have offered the ability to stream its TV channels live on the iPhone and iPad for a long time using its Sky Player service. However, in order to access the service you had to pay £8 a month on your mobile and a whopping £35 a month to watch the service on iPad.
Sky Player has now been re-branded and is known as Sky Go. Sky Go is now available free to existing Sky customers and can be used on PCs, Laptops, Apple iPads and Apple iPhones.
Sadly, on mobiles you won't have access to all the channels available in the PC version. On your mobile or tablet you'll only be able to watch ESPN, Sky Sports Channels and Sky News. On the PC 30 channels are available including Sky Movies, Sky Atlantic, MTV and Sky1.
Sky Go enables you to add up to two devices , but once you have reached the maximum you can remove a device and add a different device one once every month. Supported Apple products include all devices running on Android iOS 4.0 or later, which includes iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPhone 4 , iPad and iPad 2.
Those hoping to watch Sky when they are abroad will be disappointed because the service is only available in the UK.
The Sky Go application will be available to download from July 6th in the UK !
The new change is a welcome addition because to be frank £35 a month to watch Sky on your iPad was a ridiculous price to pay. Those who don't currently subscribe to Sky can access Sky Go from anywhere between £15 and £40 a month. The are effectively the standard prices for SKY in your home, so you may as well get it installed their instead.
The announcement coincides with Sky buying "The Cloud" which has an extensive WiFi network in the UK. However, at this time Sky didn't announce whether you'll be able to use the WiFi hotspots free of charge. If this does prove to be the case the deal would be fantastic, but we think they might charge a monthly fee to those wanting to use the WiFi network.
The Sky Go application is sure to be one of the most successful application launches of the year and we can't wait to watch football on our iPad on the beach ! Once we hear more about Sky Go we'll let you know.
