3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Technology Now Available

Next-generation wireless data access technology that will offer mobile subscribers connectivity at speeds up to 16 times faster than today's wireless connection rates is now available for customer field trials from CommWorks, a 3Com company, the company said today. 1xEV-DO ( 1x Evolution-Data Optimized ) is a new air interface technology specifically designed for packet data. This next generation wireless standard is designed to achieve peak data rates of 2.4 megabits per second within the same 1.25MHz spectrum used in today's Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks. With 1xEV-DO, mobile data subscribers will enjoy faster access to corporate intranets, information, m-commerce, and entertainment. For wireless service providers, 1xEV-DO technology will potentially allow them to double or triple data user capacity, and offer enhanced services such as high-speed email access, video and audio streaming, interactive gaming, and other multimedia services. "Voice and data are competing for the same spectrum in today's wireless networks, and carriers typically will allocate spectrum for data services only if it will not affect voice services," said Chenwei Yan, wireless product manager, CommWorks. "A key advantage of 1xEV-DO technology is that it provides a dedicated channel for data only. Wireless operators will be able to deliver enhanced data services without impacting voice services." The Total Control(R) 1000 Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) from CommWorks, which serves as the point of entry into the wireless packet data network for mobile subscribers, will support 1xEV-DO with only a simple software upgrade. No new hardware is required. The Total Control 1000 PDSN exchanges packets with the mobile station over the radio network, and with Internet Protocol (IP) networks. To perform these functions, the Total Control 1000 PDSN interfaces with the radio network node, also called a packet control function (PCF); with a RADIUS AAA server (used for user authentication and session accounting); and with home agents for Mobile IP applications. CDMA2000 1XRTT data networking equipment from CommWorks is now deployed by leading wireless service providers in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Korea, creating the necessary conduit for delivering enhanced revenue-generating applications and services. CommWorks(R) wireless data access products enable service providers to offer high-speed, wireless data access to the mobile Internet and to private intranets, including quick, authenticated Internet access using Simple IP services; and fast, secure access to home or private networks using Mobile IP services. |
