US : In the second quarter alone, more than 10 million pictures were sent over the enhanced nationwide PCS network. Today, Sprint and Samsung are building upon the success of Picture Mail by announcing the availability of a user-friendly, affordable camera phone that features built-in flash, multi-shot feature and a 65K TFT color display. The PCS Vision Picture Phone VGA1000 by Samsung is the latest camera phone from Sprint and is available to new customers for $159.99 (SRP of $259.99) after in-store rebate.

“Camera phones are becoming increasingly more popular as evidenced by the more than 10 million pictures uploaded and sent over the enhanced nationwide PCS Network in the second quarter alone. In addition, we’re hearing about creative ways people are using these phones, whether it’s to share a funny moment or prevent a potential crime,” said John Garcia, senior vice president of marketing, sales and distribution for the PCS Division of Sprint. “The keys to the success behind Picture Mail have been flat-rate pricing, ease-of-use, fun features such as frames and voice clips and affordable phones. We expect that the VGA1000, an affordable feature-rich phone, will be extremely popular with PCS customers and continue to drive mass market adoption of Picture Mail.”
“According to Strategy Analytics, approximately 147 million camera phones will be sold worldwide in 2007,” said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president of Samsung’s wireless terminals division. “To meet this growing market demand, Samsung is building on its camera phone portfolio by introducing the VGA1000. With its built-in flash, digital zoom and industry-best TFT color screens, the user friendly VGA1000 will help Samsung impact the market by raising the standard for embedded camera phones while providing consumers with the latest in emerging wireless trends.”

Sprint recently announced 2.1 million PCS Vision customers through the end of second quarter, leading the industry in the use of advanced data services. PCS Vision from Sprint includes services that allow customers to take and receive pictures from select PCS Phones; browse the Internet at speeds faster than most dial-up connections; check personal and corporate e-mail; watch clips and stream audio for news and music; download polyphonic, animated and voice ringers, and full-color, graphically-rich games and screen savers, all on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.

Features of the VGA1000 include:

Compact Clamshell Design: 3.5” x 1.9” x 1.0” and 4.5 ounces
VGA-Quality Camera: Take a picture anytime and share it with family and friends instantly while on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network. You can even attach a 10-second voice message and text a text message to your picture.
Picture Mailsm: Shoot digital pictures with a built-in VGA camera, then share them through your PCS Vision Picture Phone to other PCS Vision phones or email addresses. Attach a 10-second voice memo (voice clip) to the picture and send it along with your photo which can be played through compatible picture phones and through PC browsers when sent to email addresses.
External Picture Caller ID: Link a picture or downloaded graphic to the contacts in your internal Phone Book and see who’s calling without opening the phone
Inside Color Screen: Vibrant TFT, 65K color display
Outside Color Screen: 65K color caller ID on the outside of the flip for picture caller ID and self-portrait camera mode
