The joint scheme involves classification of websites and those which are rated "18" will be barred by the adult purchasing the phone for their children. An independent body will classify content to criteria yet to be agreed but will follow other existing systems e.g. cinema movies. Retailers must verify customer's ages when necessary. The scheme has been agreed by mobile operators Orange, O2, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone and 3. 3 are the only company that currently supply the 3G handsets. This is the first time a scheme like this will be introduced for the internet. Adult moderators will be introduced for mobile chat rooms in a bid to prevent pedophiles using the new technology as a way of meeting children. A recent report confirmed that child porn offences had increased by 1,500% since the early days of the internet and that 3G technology could make children more vulnerable. Some exisiting services which are beleived to be in need of classification are "Top Shelf - PlayBoy and Paul Reymond" from 3G mobile operator 3 UK and other services like "Sexy Babes" from Vodafone in Germany. |
