Europe : It has been recently reported that over 120 million mobile phone users around the globe are using a 2D barcode reader to launch mobile internet pages onto their mobile phones.
The barcode reader is downloadable from 3G Vision and is called i-nigma . Above shows an overview of the process from creating a server code ( 1) , scanning ( 4 ) to when the browser is opened in the mobile phone with the URL ( 6 ) .
Once the reader is installed, the mobile device’s camera ( if you have one of course ) is used to scan a particular barcode ( called snapping ) and the mobile phone’s browser launches automatically, loading up the web address associated with the scanned barcode.
With the i-nigma reader installed, mobile subscribers use their mobile camera phone to scan or snap barcodes and the phone’s browser activates, automatically directing them to a designated web site linked to the barcodes.
Companies that have already deployed campaigns with 3GVision using the i-nigma barcode reader include the Sun newspaper and Pepsi Max ( both in the UK ) and others include Gazzetta Dello Sport in Italy and Yellow Pages in Spain. In addition a mumber of mobile phone operators (Telstra, France Telecom, Claro, Hutchison 3, NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank and Willcom ) have successfully deployed i-nigma .
3Gvision’s reader is pre-embedded as a native application by Telstra and France Telecom, as well as most Japanese handset manufacturers and vendors including Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Panasonic, Casio, Hitachi, Sanyo, Sharp, NEC, Kyocera and Toshiba.
The reader is a 1D and 2D application for mobile phones and incorporates :
- code-scanning software for the phone
- highly intuitive and simple code-creation
- ad campaign management and metrics reporting platform
“Reaching this significant user milestone is yet another demonstration that mobile users around the world want fast and easy access to the internet while on the move,” said Mendy Mendelson, CEO of 3GVision. “Furthermore, it shows how useful our technology is in helping mobile operators and leading content providers and advertisers create and run rich mobile marketing and advertising campaigns that generate additional new revenue streams and boost consumer loyalty.”
