LGE exports CDMA wireless equipment to Vietnam
18th June 2002 by The Korea herald www.koreaherald.co.kr
LG Electronics agreed to ship CDMA (code divison multiple access) equipment worth $35 million to Vietnam, as part of efforts to boost its standing in the fast-growing Southeast Asian mobile market.

LG said that it ships CDMA 2000 1x system, a core third-generation mobile equipment that handles not only voice but also other value added services such as the Internet.

The company said it provides the system to S-Telecom, a joint venture between SLD and Vietnamese mobile carrier Saigon PosTel. SLD is a company in Vietnam jointly founded by top mobile carrier SK Telecom, LG Electronics and DongAh Elecomm Inc.

"The CDMA equipment will be installed by the end of September and CDMA 2000 1x service is likely to start in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi around the end of the year," LG said.

LG said it beat other bidders such as Nortel Networks of Canada and NEC of Japan to secure the equipment order, a performance that it hopes will lead to a bigger share in the Vietnamese CDMA equipment market.

It said Vietnam's CDMA 2000 1x equipment market is forecast to grow to $100 million in five years.

Meanwhile, LG grabbed the CDMA WLL (wireless local loop) system deal valued at $15 million for Vietnam Post & Telecommunications (VNPT) in April last year, kicking off its foray into the Southeast Asian country's mobile equipment market.
