Next Generation CDMA2000 Wireless Technologies

21 June , 2005

US : The CDMA Development Group (CDG) announced that the CDMA2000 industry will continue to evaluate different techniques and evolution paths for CDMA2000 technologies at the next Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) meeting, which is taking place in Seoul, Korea on June 28-29.

Operators and infrastructure manufacturers will explore future enhancements for CDMA2000 air interface, core network and terminals to further increase spectral efficiencies, data throughput and service delivery.

Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, commented, “The CDMA2000 migration path offers operators the performance and flexibility to introduce advanced services rapidly and cost efficiently. By upgrading their existing networks, CDMA2000 operators were first to deploy 3G services and broadband wireless technologies. Now the industry is looking beyond 3G toward all IP-based standards to support next-generation networks and services.”

First deployed in October 2000, CDMA2000 3G technologies now serve more than 168 million subscribers worldwide. CDMA2000 operators are upgrading their networks to 1xEV-DO, the most advanced broadband wireless technology deployed today, and next year they will start introducing Revision A, an all-IP enhancement that will further boost data throughput and introduce VoIP (Voice over the Internet Protocol).

At the “Evolving to Future Wireless Telecommunication Technology” workshop organized by 3GPP2, the CDMA2000 community will discuss various proposals for next-generation evolution of CDMA2000. A number of technology options will be considered for enhancements, including OFDM, MIMO, Smart Antenna technologies, Interference Cancellation, techniques to improve QoS (Quality of Service), the use of multi carriers to increase data throughput, and improvements to battery life.

About CDMA2000
CDMA2000 is by far the most widely deployed 3G technology, serving more than 168 million users worldwide. There are 144 CDMA2000 commercial networks, and 40 more are being deployed. CDMA2000 has become the technology of choice for cdmaOne™, TDMA, analog and Greenfield operators, and is deployed in the 450, 800, 1700, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands. More than 850 CDMA2000 devices are available on the market.
