Borland
Software Corporation and Sprint today announced a relationship to extend
the development of wireless applications for Java(TM) enabled phones
and devices that run on Sprint's all-digital, all PCS nationwide network.
As part of the agreement, Borland(R) JBuilder(TM) MobileSet, a Java(TM)
2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) compliant development environment
will support the Sprint PCS Wireless Toolkit(sm) for the Java Platform.
This agreement will also allow Borland to distribute the Sprint PCS
Wireless Toolkit(sm) for the Java Platform as part of JBuilder MobileSet,
and will enable Sprint to distribute JBuilder MobileSet along with the
evaluation version of Borland JBuilder Enterprise for mobile developers,
free of charge. JBuilder MobileSet, an add-on which fully integrates
into JBuilder, the market leading Java development environment, and
the Sprint PCS Wireless Toolkit(sm) for the Java Platform are key offerings
for seeding and educating the market on wireless application design
and development for the Sprint Third Generation Network.
"Through this agreement, Sprint is clearly extending its reach
to deliver the best-designed JAVA applications as we launch the Sprint
Third Generation Network. Borland, with more than 2.5 million developers
and leadership in Java development, helps Sprint connect a larger base
of developers with the essential technical information needed to create
valuable wireless Java applications for Sprint 3G-enabled devices,"
said John Yuzdepski, vice president and general manager of Sprint's
PCS.com division.
Through JBuilder MobileSet's support for the Sprint PCS Wireless Toolkit(sm)
for the Java Platform, the two companies intend to provide developers
with an easy-to-use, comprehensive, Java development environment to
enable faster time to market as they create applications for Java-enabled
phones on Sprint's PCS nationwide network.
"The addition of Sprint, which operates the largest all-digital,
all-PCS nationwide wireless network in the United States, to Borland's
wireless partnership roster, exemplifies Borland's continued success
and leadership in powering wireless business solutions," said Tony
de la Lama, vice president of Java solutions for Borland. "Our
initiatives with Sprint further confirm the importance of providing
standards-based, best-in-class software solutions to the growing community
of mobile Java applications developers -- a commitment both companies
share."
Borland and Sprint will demonstrate beta-level functionality of the
software at the 2002 JavaOne(SM) Conference in San Francisco, the week
of March 25, 2002. Developers can also see Borland JBuilder MobileSet
at the Borland booth #420. Moving forward, the Sprint PCS Wireless Toolkit(sm)
for the Java Platform will be available for free download from their
developer site (http://www.developer.sprintpcs.com/index.jsp) and the
new versions of Borland JBuilder MobileSet will be available for free
download from the Borland Web site (http://www.borland.com/jbuilder/mobileset/download.html).
