Symbian OS Tools for 3G Phones

2nd March, 2004

US : Metrowerks will soon offer developers creating software components of Symbian OS phones a development tool suite for Symbian OS™ version 8.0, with the up coming release of CodeWarrior Development Studio for Symbian OS, OEM Edition, version 2.8.

Metrowerks has worked closely with Symbian to produce a comprehensive and integrated toolchain that addresses the OEM development process from board bring-up to software integration and testing. Providing support for both kernel configurations of Symbian OS version 8.0, the Metrowerks product offers OEMs the tools necessary to quickly complete operating system (OS) base ports, develop peripheral device drivers and integrate native applications for phones based on Symbian OS version 8.0.

“With its hard real-time kernel, Symbian OS version 8.0 is the future platform for 3G mobile phones with advanced multimedia and IP networking functionality. We have worked closely to partner with Metrowerks to ensure that CodeWarrior for Symbian OS v2.8, OEM Edition, provides excellent OS-aware on-target debugging support in the context of the hard real-time kernel,” said Morten Grauballe, vice president of Product Management for Symbian. “OS-aware, on-target debugging is vital for the productivity of all parties working with Symbian OS to create advanced, open mobile phones, whether our licensees, semiconductor partners, or software technology partners.”

Version 2.8 was specifically designed to address OEM software development needs. It includes an updated integrated development environment (IDE), which supports Symbian OS and is engineered to handle challenging software development projects. Additional features include updated command line adapters for emulation and target builds that enable configuration control, an environment editor for making changes within the IDE and configuration files for accessing licensing and support services.

“Metrowerks has responded to the Symbian market, delivering development solutions that help Symbian licensees succeed in bringing new phones to market,” said Heikki Koivu, director of Development Platform Tools for Nokia. “The integration of Symbian OS and the CodeWarrior IDE offers Nokia and our licensees the opportunity to quickly adopt Symbian OS Version 8 into new device designs that meet customer demands.”

CodeWarrior™ Development Studio for Symbian OS, OEM Edition, version 2.8 offers software developers a variety of options for debugging. Advanced hardware developers can do kernel-level source code debugging with stop-mode support for Symbian OS using JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) hardware. In addition, developers can also use a Virtio™ software simulator or Symbian Techview, Series 60 and UIQ emulators to debug applications.

Providing developers with multiple debugging options in a single, integrated environment enables them to port to new hardware, write device drivers and integrate applications into the device with exceptional ease and efficiency. By tightly integrating the IDE and OS, Metrowerks and Symbian have streamlined the development process and eliminated much of the time and cost associated with integrating various tool sets and development components.

Metrowerks also offers CodeTEST™ Software Analysis Tools for Symbian OS, which is engineered to help reduce development costs and improve application quality by offering code visibility and precise application analysis within a single tool to conduct performance measurement and verification throughout the development process. The suite offers clear, detailed measurement analysis of applications running on Symbian OS development systems, including performance profiling, software trace, memory analysis and code coverage capabilities. Together with the CodeWarrior development studio, device manufacturers have a standardized, integrated tool chain for creating applications quickly.
