UK : NTT DOCOMO has announced it will show a prototype mobile phone made from wood at ITU Telecom World 2009.
NTT is playing the “eco-card” by using surplus wood that is removed to maintain healthy forests to produce the mobile.
The prototype has been produced in collaboration with Sharp, Olympus and “more trees”, which is a reforestation project.
The mobile has been codenamed “TOUCH WOOD” and is made from cypress wood, and is incredibly durable and resistant to water, insects and mildew. It is specially prepared using three-dimensional compression molding technique to achieve the aforementioned properties.

Each TOUCH WOOD is unique, because no two pieces of wood are identical in terms of grain or colouring. The wood isn’t coloured either, so it retains it natural look, but it does gain extra shine from the compression procedure.
The phones GUI draws on the style of the photographic art by Mikiya Takimoto who is a tree-lover.
The mockup photos shown above show both a stylish and elegant mobile which we can see being popular with all our Prius driving friends.
The TOUCH WOOD will be showcased at ITU Telecom World , which is held in Geneva from October 5th to 9th and CEATEC JAPAN 2009 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba Prefecture, Japan from October 6 to 10.
