The Google Pixel 8a is a phone that might make you think twice about buying the full fat Pixel 8, because for less money you’re getting a very similar handset here – and a phone that’s one of the very best mid-range options available.

The Google Pixel 8a has the same Tensor G3 chipset as the standard Pixel 8 and even the Google Pixel 8 Pro, as well as having as much RAM as the Pixel 8 at 8GB. That combination means it’s also capable of all the same clever AI abilities as the other Pixel 8 models.

This includes things like being able to move and erase people and objects in photos, summarise articles with AI, search the web for things you see in images and videos, unblur out of focus shots, and loads more besides.

The Google Pixel 8a will also get seven years of Android updates, so unlike most mid-rangers this is a phone that will stay up to date and securely patched for a long time.

On top of all that, the Pixel 8a has a stylish, colourful design, along with a 6.1-inch OLED display that at 1080 x 2400 is just as sharp as the Pixel 8’s, and its refresh rate is just as high too, at 120Hz.

The Pixel 8a is water resistant as well, and it has a pair of capable cameras, headlined by a 64MP main snapper, and aided massively by the aforementioned AI.

The Google Pixel 8a’s battery can keep up with daily life too, lasting for upwards of 24 hours – or for up to 72 hours if you enable Extreme Battery Saver, and there’s an under-display fingerprint sensor, wireless charging, 5G, and stereo speakers.
