RIM originally planned to launch their new operating system, Blackberry 10, at the end of 2012. However, they've now announced it has been delayed until the first quarter of 2012. Apparently RIM have run into a few problems while developing the operating system which have led to the slight delay.
This is the second piece of disappointing news that Blackberry have released in recent times because last month we heard that current Blackberry smartphones won't be upgradeable to Blackberry 10. However, this could be seen as a good thing because it shows just how revolutionary Blackberry 10 will be compared to previous versions.
The last year hasn't been a good one for RIM because the company has seen both their reputation and sales dropping sharply. Infact, alongside the delay of Blackberry 10 RIM also confirmed they'll be cutting 5,000 jobs after reporting a 334m loss in the second quarter of 2012.
Blackberry's reputation, particularly in the enterprise market, was damaged by a worldwide server crash earlier in the year, while sales have dropped due to the continued success of Apple's iPhone and the growing power of the Android platform.
RIM are placing huge hopes on the Blackberry 10 operating system and consequently taking a little more time before releasing it could be a smart move. Expected improvements in Blackberry 10 include a new on-screen keyboard, a camera application with a rewind feature and a whole new user-interface.
