The five must-have apps for your brand-new iPhone X

The iPhone X is sure to be in the hands of millions before long and if you’re planning to be among that number you’ll likely want to know which apps to get.

There are millions available, and many of them are very high-quality, but only a small number really make the most of the iPhone X’s features.

The following five are among the best for that, bringing augmented reality worlds to life, displaying video like never before on an iPhone, and powering up its impressive camera.

Netflix

The iPhone X has the biggest screen ever to grace an iPhone. At 5.8 inches it’s great for watching films and TV shows on, especially as it’s also sharp.

There are lots of video apps around, but few that can match Netflix, especially as it’s got an iPhone X-friendly trick up its sleeve, specifically HDR content.

The iOS app has already been updated to let you view HDR content on the iPhone X, despite the phone not even being out at the time of writing, so video will really pop.

Add to that the fact that Netflix has thousands of shows and movies, including originals that you can’t see anywhere else, and it’s pretty close to essential for any iPhone X owner.

Night Sky

Apple has made a big push for augmented reality (AR) with its newest handsets and its new ARKit developer tools, and we’re already starting to see the fruits of that.

One of the best early examples of the potential of AR on the iPhone X is Night Sky. Simply point your iPhone X at the night sky, and stars, planets and constellations will be highlighted on the screen, overlaid on the actual sky.

But Night Sky can go even further than that, with its new Grand Orrery feature which brings the solar system into your home, letting you walk around it and move closer to planets to see them in more detail, all through the power of AR.

My Very Hungry Caterpillar AR

Less practical but more fun, My Very Hungry Caterpillar AR also makes great use of augmented reality. Simply place an egg down in front of you using the iPhone X’s camera to position it, then see it hatch into a caterpillar.

You can feed your hungry caterpillar fruit and give it toys, and eventually it will turn into a butterfly and fly away.

If you’re a fan of the book, or have a tiny person at home who is, My Very Hungry Caterpillar AR will bring it to life like never before.

infltr

The camera is one of the highlights of the iPhone X. It’s a dual-lens one capable of clever tricks like bokeh effects and optical zoom. But there are various apps to help you get the most out of it, including infltr.

That name stands for infinite filters, so knowing that you should have a good idea of what you get here – more filters than you’ll know what to do with.

They’re not quite infinite, but there are more than 7 million, so you can make your images look truly unique, and infltr has also been updated with iOS 11 and the iPhone X in mind, including new depth effect filters and the ability to add a different filter to the background and foreground of an image, taking the iPhone X’s Portrait Mode to a whole new level.

ProCam 5

Want more control over your iPhone X’s camera? Then you’ll want ProCam 5. It gives you access to various shooting modes, such as night mode and burst mode, as well as shutter release options, such as anti-shake and self-timer, and a whole lot more.

You can choose between a wide range of video frame rates and resolutions whether shooting a normal video or a time lapse, and there are loads of manual controls, plus the ability to see the live shutter speed, ISO, white balance and focus values.

Files can be saved in RAW or TIFF format, and there are various edit tools too, letting you alter your images in non-destructive ways, as you can always undo an edit.

ProCam 5 will improve the photographic capabilities of any iOS device, but it’s sure to be at its best when paired with the iPhone X’s powerful camera.
