Samsung has just unveiled four of the most exciting handsets of the year, headlined by a trio of Samsung Galaxy S20 handsets. These are the successors to the Samsung Galaxy S10 range and are set to be the company’s main high-end phones for 2020, meaning they’re also likely to rank among the very best phones of the year.
First up there’s the standard Samsung Galaxy S20, which has a 6.2-inch 1440 x 3200 screen, a 120Hz refresh rate (for silky smooth interactions), a top-end Exynos 990 chipset, 12GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 4,000mAh battery, and an in-screen fingerprint scanner.
It also has a triple-lens rear camera, with a 64MP telephoto lens, a 12MP main lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide one. The telephoto is the clear highlight though, and it’s capable of 3x hybrid optical or 30x digital zoom. Finally, it has a 10MP camera on the front.
Moving up the range we come to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, which keeps the same resolution, basic camera setup, and power, but ups the screen size to 6.7 inches and adds a fourth lens (for depth sensing) on the rear. It also has a larger 4,500mAh battery and can be had with up to 512GB of storage.
Finally, there’s the monstrous Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. This has a 6.9-inch 1440 x 3200 screen, an Exynos 990 chipset and up to 16GB of RAM, which is unheard of in other phones.
It also has a 5,000mAh battery, up to 512GB of storage, and a completely different camera setup, headlined by a 48MP zoom lens capable of 10x hybrid optical or 100x digital zoom, so you can zoom in seriously far.
The other lenses include a massive 108MP main one, a 12MP ultra-wide one, and a depth-sensing one, plus there’s a 40MP snapper on the front.
All three phones also come in 5G versions, and they all have stunning designs, with curved screens, punch-hole cameras and water resistance. They’re also pricey of course, with the Samsung Galaxy S20 starting at £799, the Galaxy S20 Plus at £999, and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra at £1,199. All three phones hit stores on March 13, but pre-orders are already opening.
As exciting as those three phones are we’re not done, because Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip. This is a foldable phone with a 1080 x 2636 6.7-inch display that can be folded shut, halving the size in your pocket, and keeping the display protected. When closed there’s a tiny 1.1-inch ‘Cover Display’ that you can rely on for basic notifications.
Folds aside, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has a high (but not quite top) end Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a 3,300mAh battery, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a dual-lens camera, with 12MP main and ultra-wide lenses, along with a 10MP selfie one.
So the specs aren’t quite as impressive as the Samsung Galaxy S20 range, but that foldable screen means it’s still more futuristic overall. This will set you back £1,300 and will be available from February 14.
