NavFree Hits 5.5 Million Downloads

NavFree launched two years ago and had its sights set on taking on the mighty Nokia and TomTom in the mobile GPS navigation market.

Since the launch NavFree has now been downloaded over 5.5 million times, which is the same amount of times as Nokia's GPS navigation software. Navfree is also attracting 500,000 new users every month , so it won't take long before it hits the 10 million mark.

Considering the amount of mobiles Nokia sells that's quite an achievement. So why has NavFree proved so popular ?

First of all NavFree is totally free to download and use which gives it a huge advantage over premium satellite navigation applications. Furthermore, the maps are updated by users meaning they are entirely accurate and don't suffer from some of the problems generally seen on mobile satellite navigation software.

Infact, users of Navfree are making up to 20,000 corrections each month with the total number of changes standing at around 400,000. The software is available on both Apple's iOS operating system and Google's Android OS, which covers around 80 per cent of the total smartphone market.

NavFree has only been available for Android since November , which makes its success even more impressive. Although, Google Maps has quite a grip on the Android market we can still see NavFree proving hugely successful on the platform.
