Three has now launched its 5G network as they launched 5G home broadband in parts of London, so if you’re lucky enough to be in a coverage area you can ditch your fibre.
And you might well want to, because there are some big advantages to 5G home broadband, including the fact that it’s plug and play with no engineer visits, so it’s quick and easy to set up and you can easily take it with you when you move house. Three will also send you your kit the next working day free of charge, or give you same day delivery for £20.

So it’s convenient, but it’s also very fast, with average speeds currently advertised at 100Mbps when we looked (though this may vary by area). That’s competitive with fibre broadband, and so is the price, with Three offering it on 12-month contracts for £35 per month with no upfront cost. And you get unlimited data too.
Three’s 5G router also lets you connect up to 64 devices simultaneously, so even the smartest of homes should be covered.
Of course, you have to be in London to take advantage, and even then only select areas can get it, such as parts of Camden, Ealing, Acton, Clapham, Hoxton, Dalston, Finsbury Park and more.
This coverage is set to expand rapidly though. In fact, Three has previously promised to bring 5G to 25 towns and cities by the end of 2019. And at some point this year it will also offer 5G for phones, rather than just homes.
But when it comes to broadband, the simple, speedy setup and lack of need for a landline gives Three 5G an advantage over fibre, while its low cost could make it more appealing than its only current direct rival – Vodafone’s 5G home broadband service, as for the same amount of data that costs £50 per month. Though it is available in parts of Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as London.
