Virgin Media are thought to be locked in talks with EE (Everything Everywhere) about launching 4G LTE services in the UK this year. That would give them an advantage over O2 and Vodafone who have to wait until the 4G auctions next year.
Virgin Media already use EE's network which means they already potentially have access to the 1800 MHz spectrum that EE are using to provide 4G LTE in the UK. However, we guess the sharing agreement currently in place doesn't apply to 4G and that it's up to EE to agree to Virgin's proposal.
Everything Everywhere have already sold some 1800 MHz spectrum to Three, which shows they are willing to let other operators offer 4G LTE in the UK. However, we feel that was a political move because it took place before OFCOM approved their 4G LTE proposal.
Virgin Media will no doubt be doing everything they can to convince EE to allow them to use their 4G LTE spectrum. For an up and coming network it would be a huge deal to get a competitive advantage over bigger rivals such as O2 and Vodafone.
3G will keep you updated on all the latest in Virgin Media's quest to launch 4G LTE in the UK this year, as well as any other news related to 4G LTE when it surfaces.
