Overview

The Google Pixel 4 is the latest phone for Android purists and it’s a big upgrade on the Google Pixel 3, with the camera perhaps being the real star.

You wouldn’t know that to look at the specs – it has two lenses, which is a very ordinary number by modern standards, but Google has always taken a quality over quantity approach to photography, with the single-lens Pixel 3 still taking better snaps than many triple and quad-lens handsets.

So here with the Pixel 4 you get pretty much the same great 12.2MP main lens, but this time it’s joined by a 16MP telephoto lens, offering 2x optical zoom.

The Pixel 4’s camera is also packed full of new and improved software, allowing it to take stunning shots even in low light, for example, as well as using a neural engine to improve how images look in general.

The Google Pixel 4 also has a 5.7-inch 1080 x 2280 screen. That’s compact by flagship standards, making it ideal if you don’t want a massive phone, but it’s still a great screen, with a 90Hz refresh rate making everything feel smoother.

Plus, the Pixel 4 is one of the first phones to run Android 10, and being a Google handset this is pure Android 10. It will also get software updates more or less immediately, while many other phones will be waiting months.

Performance is strong too, thanks to a flagship Snapdragon 855 chipset and 6GB of RAM, and the Google Pixel 4 packs handy extras like squeezable sides that launch Google Assistant, and a Motion Sense feature that lets you swipe your hand above the screen to carry out actions, without ever touching the display. All that, and this is cheaper than most high-end phones.
